Update from Rent – Everything is falling into place

Today we have an update from Cerin who is busy rehearsing with Edinburgh Music Theatre for their production of Rent:

Hello once more,

With only a few weeks to go everything is falling into place for the show. The cast are at the stage of running the show through and we have all the props now for them to use in rehearsals. One of the many challenges has been the construction of some moving pieces of set, and by a combination of the skills of a stage carpenter building some movable trucks, and a hire company providing us with the stair and platform pieces that go on top of the trucks, we have a solution.

It is the logistics of solving this kind of set dilemma (and then finding a rehearsal space where we can actually store and use them) not to mention getting a graffiti artist, the paint, fire–proofing all fabric on stage, making some detail for the set, hiring vans, etc etc… the list is endless, that the cast are blissfully unaware of. Until of course they see it all come together on stage to support what they are delivering.

The cast, of course, have their own personal journey to make and I take my hat off to them for learning so many words, notes and moves! Not to mention the emotional engagement that is required in bringing the characters to life in a way which is ‘real’ to the audience. It is this, coupled with the excellence of the singing, that is one of the great strengths of our production.

The whole company is now encouraging friends, family and others to buy tickets for the show. It is so important to play to a big audience. There is nothing so soul destroying as performing to a half empty auditorium. Fortunately that won’t be the case as Edinburgh Music Theatre has built up a reputation as one of the best amateur companies in Edinburgh and so has a loyal following. There is still, rightly so, an expectation that the cast will sell as many tickets as they can.

So what are you guaranteed if you come to the show? Fantastic performances; a brilliant band; inspiring and interesting set; professional sound, lighting, direction and musical direction; but above all I think you will be reminded of what it is to be a human being, to laugh, love, cry and be enthralled by the skill of others in making you believe a reality is being played out on stage in front of you.

See you there. How could you not come now!

Speak to you again soon.

Best wishes

Cerin
